The Histotechnician Trainee performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by the pathologist(s), according to policies and procedures. Works under direct supervision and follows standard procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks. This position requires the ability to fully understand all equipment, its maintenance, and its processes. Participates in continuing education/in-service training sessions sponsored by the department; continues growth by preparing for the Histology Technician certification exam.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine histology, including specimen processing, embedding, slide preparation, microtomy, staining, and immunohistochemistry.
  • Prepares and maintains working solutions for routine H&E staining and special stains on automatic stainers.
  • Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens and ensures correct patient labeling.
  • Correctly prepares special stains and solutions.
  • Routinely checks and verifies surgical case numbers match blocks and slides; prints labels as appropriate.
  • Records in laboratory logbooks show that all slides and stains are prepared daily.
  • Logs appropriate information into the surgical pathology computer system.
  • Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment and troubleshoots minor equipment failures.
  • Documents remedial actions such as repairs or repeated tests.
  • Follows appropriate laboratory safety protocols.
  • Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies and documents all quality control activities.
  • Ensures compliance with all local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.
  • Adheres to attendance and punctuality guidelines.
Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Productivity: Must meet minimum productivity criteria in current role to be considered.
  • Quality: Must have good quality, no B or C OMs/Critical errors.
  • Attendance: No written or above warnings.
  • Behavior/Attitude: Must live the values, be proactive, be solution-minded, and have a positive attitude on the floor.
  • 6+ months experience in the current role in an anatomic pathology laboratory
  • High School diploma or equivalent required. A bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences is strongly preferred.
  • HT/HTL (ASCP) certification or eligible preferred
  • Demonstrated understanding of the equipment used daily; including, but not limited to, microtome, stainer/cover slipper, and slide labeler.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced, high-volume, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to thrive in a team and service-oriented environment and must maintain a professional demeanor in interactions with physicians and lab personnel.
  • Ability to maintain schedule flexibility, and when problems arise, may be required to work overtime.
  • Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required.
  • May be exposed to hazardous waste material including stain waste (i.e., hematoxylin, eosin, etc.) aromatic hydrocarbons (xylene), and other combustible organics (i.e., ethyl alcohol and isopropanol).


Lab Specific Qualifications

  • Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and analytical skills to distinguish fine detail.
  • Ability to tolerate extensive periods seated and/or standing.
  • Must possess the ability to perform repetitive motion.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • May have exposure to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes, and bio-hazardous material/chemicals including formalin in the lab environment.
  • May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens and general laboratory reagents; handle live human specimens, tissues, and bodily fluid.
