The Histotechnician Trainee performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by the pathologist(s), according to policies and procedures. Works under direct supervision and follows standard procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks. This position requires the ability to fully understand all equipment, its maintenance, and its processes. Participates in continuing education/in-service training sessions sponsored by the department; continues growth by preparing for the Histology Technician certification exam.
Responsibilities
- Performs routine histology, including specimen processing, embedding, slide preparation, microtomy, staining, and immunohistochemistry.
- Prepares and maintains working solutions for routine H&E staining and special stains on automatic stainers.
- Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens and ensures correct patient labeling.
- Correctly prepares special stains and solutions.
- Routinely checks and verifies surgical case numbers match blocks and slides; prints labels as appropriate.
- Records in laboratory logbooks show that all slides and stains are prepared daily.
- Logs appropriate information into the surgical pathology computer system.
- Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment and troubleshoots minor equipment failures.
- Documents remedial actions such as repairs or repeated tests.
- Follows appropriate laboratory safety protocols.
- Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control policies and documents all quality control activities.
- Ensures compliance with all local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.
- Adheres to attendance and punctuality guidelines.
