General Summary:

As a key member of the Corporate/North American accounting department, the General Ledger Senior Accountant II partners with members of the accounting and finance departments as well as teams across other departments throughout the Company. The position provides exposure to key accounting and reporting areas and offers development opportunities that can lead to advanced roles within the accounting organization or within other departments.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of this position may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Oversee all aspects of fixed asset accounting, including acquisition, depreciation, disposal, and reconciliation.

  • Develop and execute procedures for monthly close of capital projects and fixed assets sub ledgers.

  • Interpret impacts of lease activities on fixed asset accounting. Experience with lease accounting software a plus.

  • Independent preparation and/or review of journal entries for a number of general ledger accounts across Vertex's various entities.

  • Independent preparation and/or review of monthly and quarterly account analyses and reconciliations for a number of general ledger accounts across Vertex's various entities.

  • Collaborates with others to analyze and succinctly summarize monthly and quarterly fluctuations in fixed assets and key business accruals.

  • Maintains and leverages the financial accounting systems and processes in order to inform critical financial decision-making company-wide.

  • Provides and interprets data for tax team and external auditors during quarterly and year end audits.

  • Coordinates SOX documentation and testing with the internal audit team and quarterly footnote and disclosure deliverables with the SEC reporting team.

  • Independently executes testing in fixed asset subledger to support expansion, new product growth, reporting enhancements and project accounting.

  • Proactively provides observations/recommendations to all levels of management on gaining efficiencies in the monthly general ledger close process. Experience with process automation and project management tools a plus.

  • Prepare quarterly fixed asset reporting package for management.

  • Participate in special projects and collaborate with other members of the accounting and finance teams to achieve common objectives. Assist with the development and communication of the vision, business case, and requirements for changes.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting field.

  • 3-5 years proven experience in an accounting environment, preferably within a pharmaceutical company and/or Big 4 Accounting firm. CPA a plus.

  • Experience with Oracle Financial software and Oracle Project Accounting a plus.

  • Expertise with Excel and PowerPoint; proficiency in Hyperion and Business intelligence platforms a plus.

  • Solid understanding of accounting principles and financial metrics. Experience working closely with Finance and IT a plus.

  • Strong business acumen and judgment; knowledge of the company's markets/products and industry trends is a plus.

  • Strong analytical skills and demonstrated experience with SOX.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and an eagerness to collaborate with colleagues (within or outside of finance) in sharing insights and learning's and partnering to ensure timely execution of project plans.

  • Possesses a continuous improvement mindset, with flexibility and ability to adapt to change.
