GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Research Technician I completes tasks to support the research endeavors of the laboratory. Performs or assists in experiments for research projects under supervision of the project head and the PI of the laboratory. This includes conducting cell culture experiments and molecular biology techniques as well as collection of and accurate recording of procedures and results, maintenance of databases used in the lab, ordering necessary reagents to conduct experiments, and participation in joint upkeep of the lab. Provides assistance to other laboratory members in areas such as cell viability assays, biomaterials for microfabrication and tissue engineering, and biopreservation experiments. Provides help with several administrative tasks such as transmittal of periodic forms for incoming and outgoing personnel, ordering of Core facility supplies, maintenance and monitoring of core facility equipment, and picking up mail and other periodically distributed items from MGH main campus.

Our work, in general, is focused on the development of cryopreservation technologies for cells and whole organisms including Drosophila. Our research relies heavily on cell culture, microfluidic fabrication, biochemistry, imaging and data analysis in a fast-paced research environment. We are seeking dedicated, enthusiastic and self-driven candidates who would like to grow in an academic environment.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Carries out a wide range of lab techniques and properly follows protocols and instruction. These may include culture, preservation, and handling of primary human and animal cells and cell lines, biochemical assays, biochemistry techniques, and small molecule toxicity testing and other cellular and supernatant based assays. Applies knowledge of heat transfer, biochemistry, biology and engineering in the performance of research investigation.
  • Correctly operates equipment used within the research laboratory. Reports equipment malfunctions to management. Provides assistance with maintenance and monitoring of core facility equipment such as microscopes.
  • Collects and records study data. Synthesizes and interprets information obtained from graphs, charts, laboratory experiments, statistical summaries and other data collection methods and provides to PI. Effectively uses computer programs as well as performs data entry into databases.
  • Maintains a lab notebook (physical and electronic). Prepares written progress reports for PI on status of research, technical procedures and sequence of operations; includes statistical and graphic summaries of findings and possible conclusions. Assists the Investigator with the preparation of reports and papers for publication, such as data analysis and preparation of charts, and may be included as an author.
  • Participates in the upkeep of the lab, keeping both direct and general workspaces clean and tidy; helps to maintain an overall safe and clean environment.
  • Helps with maintenance of several shared imaging and morphology equipment.
  • Prepares stocks of necessary reagents and maintains laboratory supplies.
  • Works safely within the lab environment and in performing work duties. Wears personal protective equipment as required.
  • Notifies and seeks assistance from senior lab personnel or supervisor for any questions, unusual experimental conditions or results or needed training.
  • Provides assistance with a range of administrative tasks to include transmittal of personnel forms, Core supply ordering and mail pick up and distribution.
  • Attends lab meetings and journal clubs. Periodically presents in the journal club as assigned by the PI.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Scientific and research knowledge relevant to techniques and equipment used in a research lab. These include knowledge of mammalian cell culture, viability assays and microscopy. A strong interest in benchwork and prior experience in biological imaging techniques, and cellular and molecular biology are considered pluses. Additional skills/classes in biochemistry, chemistry, biomaterials/materials science and/or engineering fundamentals are also considered pluses.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, including microfabrication and microfluidic cell methods.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team. Willing to learn and motivation are highly critical for this position.
  • Ability to work carefully, accurate and consistent with instruction or protocol.
  • Must be able to work safely and properly use protective equipment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and knowledge of statistical and scientific plotting programs like Prism, and image analyses software like ImageJ and others.
  • Is knowledgeable and compliant in all hospital, State and Federal regulatory requirements, including hospital policy and procedures (where applicable to the performance of the job), Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
Qualifications

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in biological and/or physical sciences.


EXPERIENCE:

  • 1-2 years of wet lab experience. Related experience as obtained through a baccalaureate degree program and to include molecular biological techniques, biological imaging, biochemistry and data analysis.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Duties will be performed in a research laboratory. This setting may create contact or exposure to one or more of the following: chemicals, fluids, sharp instruments and other supplies and equipment consistent with a research lab. Contact or exposure may be airborne or physical.
