Under general supervision and following established procedures, selects proper imaging techniques, operates ultrasound-imaging equipment to acquire images and provide initial exam findings to the physician for diagnosis and treatment of pathologies.

The Senior Sonographer will ensure that the images acquired adhere to examination protocol and the study is accurate and complete. The incumbent will assist the US management team with image and exam quality assurance for students, new hires, travelers, and junior sonographers. Must be solution oriented, exemplify professional, respectful, and inclusive behavior with all staff, patients, visitors, and students and actively participate in departmental initiatives.

Incumbent participates in call, holiday, and shift rotations as department requires. May be required to rotate among main campus and community radiology locations associated with Brigham and Women's Hospital as needed.

1. Competent in performing OB ultrasound, including High Risk OB, premature infants in an intensive care unit, & abdominal vascular. Able to perform as trainer and share knowledge with sonographers who have not yet acquired these skill sets.

2. PACS, Electronic Health Record Superuser

  • Ability to reject images for other sonographers
  • Ability to assist others with US reporting issues
  • Ability to perform scheduling of exams, changing of orders, and other various Epic tasks.

3. Actively participate in research programs, quality assurance, and quality improvement projects carried on in the department

4. Remain up to date on developments and trends in imaging techniques, procedures, and equipment. To participate in education programs and meet state and national requirements for continuing educational credits.

5. Ability to recognize & communicate areas of improvement for students, new hires, travelers, and junior sonographers to the leadership team.

6. Ensures that two points of patient identification are obtained to verify correct patient is being treated. Two points of identification include date of birth (DOB), full name, medical record number (MRN).

7. Reviews the order for exam and indications, and patient's chart for pertinent clinical history.

8. Uses clear communication when explaining the exam to the patient, taking into consideration physical and emotional need. Ensures understanding and maintains ethical standards (patient confidentiality, professional conduct, etc).

9. Performs all duties pertaining to the performance of clinical and research ultrasound exams.

10. Delivers patient care under scope of license/training

11. Must be knowledgeable in the operation of all equipment to be used during the workday. This includes but is not limited to US equipment, high-level disinfectant equipment, PACS, EHR, PowerScribe, copy machine.

12. Notifies appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and repairs needed

13. Performs high quality exams, has an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology.

14. Prepares and cleans the equipment and room for each patient. Stocks supplies to ensure rooms are ready to care for patients.

15. Utilizes Hospital Information Systems (EPIC, PACS, Powerscribe) to schedule, arrive, complete, and send all patient and exam information.

16. Works collaboratively with Clinical Manager, Program Coordinator, and Lead Technologist/s to ensure smooth efficient patient flow and optimal utilization of US scanners.

17. To assume all responsibilities for on-call and holiday coverage. Remains flexible in all shift coverage and overtime situations as necessary.

18. Maintains effective working relations and communication with departmental and other hospital personnel.

19. May oversee and instruct sonographers, professional staff, and students within the department. This includes but is not limited to US equipment operation, protocols, and other technical aspects.

20. Use independent judgment and initiative under pressure in a variety of situations when performing patient exams.

21. Person who is knowledgeable with the various research projects ultrasound is involved with and can instruct others on how to perform the exams.

22. Actively participating in all the following procedures

a. Intra-operative and procedure guidance

b. Portable exams to ICU and NICU

23. Perform all other duties as directed.

Qualifications

1. Graduate of an accredited school of Diagnostic Medical Sonography and/or Imaging. Program with 7-10 years of experience as an ultrasound technologist

2. Must meet the requirements and successfully complete the ARDMS certification (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers) and/or ARRT (S) (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) and/or equivalent.

3. Must become registered in all the institution's accredited specialties: first or second specialty must be completed within one year of start of employment. Additional specialty within second year of employment.

4. Associate degree required. Bachelor's degree preferred. Will accept 15 years of experience in lieu of Associate degree.

5. High Risk OB and NICU experience strongly preferred.

6. Experience in Advanced Medical Center, Level 1 trauma center preferred
