Histology Specialist, Dermatology

Saturdays, 7:30 AM to 5 PM

Under general supervision, handles and prepares surgical tissue for microscopic analysis. Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens received. Embed, sections and stains a wide variety of routine tissue. Performs routine special stains, cover slips slides, and accurately labels slides and blocks. Responsible for sign out of slides and filing of blocks, Records work in laboratory tracking systems with a high level of accuracy. Maintains laboratory equipment and working solutions for stains. Identifies problems and brings to the attention of more senior staff. Assists with day-to-day training of new laboratory staff.

• Receive tissue specimens and enter accurately into tracking system.
• Process tissue for frozen sectioning.
• section tissue; stain slides, coverslips and labels slides.
• Review ALL slides and maps before taking them to the physician.
• Cover slips prepared slides manually or with automated systems. Records all slides and stains prepared into tracking system. Verifies match of surgical slides, file all slides.
• Prepares and maintains working solutions for routine staining on automatic staining units.
• Maintain order in the laboratory and compliance to safety regulations.
• Documents daily QC/QA for laboratory equipment.
• Identifies problems and troubleshoot under supervision.
• Appropriately dispose of biohazardous waste.
• Maintains established department policies, procedures and objectives, including the areas of quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
• Follows all National Patient Safety Goals and related Laboratory and Hospital policies.
• Participates in continuing education/in-service training sessions sponsored by the department.

• High school diploma or equivalency required.
• A.S.,B.S or B.A in a biological or chemical science and/or completion of a NACLS accredited Histology technician training program highly desired
• 1 year of experience as a histology technician.
• HT (ASCP) certification eligible.
