THE ROLE

The Counsel is an attorney position under the supervision of a Senior Managing Counsel in MFS's Legal Department that monitors and advises on global privacy and data protection laws and collaborates with MFS' Privacy Officer to ensure MFS compliance with applicable laws. The Counsel also collaborates with other attorneys to advise on cybersecurity and data governance issues more broadly.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Under the direction of a Senior Managing Counsel, act as MFS's primary legal support on issues of privacy and data protection, which requires monitoring and advising on existing and proposed laws and regulations, and collaborating with peers to ensure development of required policies, procedures, and processes. This role is global in nature and coordinates with regional attorneys outside of the U.S. to ensure that MFS' privacy and data protection program is designed to comply with rules across the world.
  • In collaboration with MFS's Compliance team, review and enhance MFS's existing privacy program, including privacy impact assessments, internal and external notices, and breach notification processes.
  • Work closely with MFS's contracts team to review, revise, and negotiate vendor and client agreements as it relates to data protection provisions.
  • Work with Legal and cross-functional colleagues, including MFS' Chief Information Security Officer and her team, to support MFS's cybersecurity and data governance programs.
  • Work closely with and manage outside counsel as it relates to privacy matters.
  • Other duties as needed based on department and/or organizational needs.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Bachelor's Degree and Juris Doctorate Degree required.
  • 6-8+ years of post-bar work experience, ideally at a law firm or investment management, financial services or industry-related firm.
  • Experience monitoring and advising on privacy and data protection laws. Some familiarity with cybersecurity laws and regulations preferred but not required.
  • Must be a member in good standing of the Bar and maintain good standing for all necessary license(s) and/or professional qualifications.
