Job Description

Aon is looking for a Sr Scientist - Storm Surge & Tropical Cyclone Hazard Model Developer (Impact Forecasting), hybrid work style in Chicago, Il.!

This role will be part of Wind modeling team within Impact Forecasting focused on development of hazard solutions for primarily storm surge related to tropical cyclones. The role responsibilities include, but are not limited to building historical and stochastic event sets, modeling of water depths, coastal flooding footprints, implementation of flood defenses and levees into models, estimating hurricane parameters, analyzing tropical cyclone related data, implementing hazard into modeling platform ELEMENTS, incorporating of climate change research into storm surge modeling etc. The position is full-time and is located in Chicago, IL. Virtual position is possible in some case.

Role Responsibilities:

Storm surge hazard (development of stochastic event set, storm surge footprints, hurricane parameter estimates etc.)

Experiments in and validation of SLOSH results, experiments in and validation of Delft3D/SFINCS results

Implementation of hazard into ELEMENTS platform, catastrophe model testing and validation

Applied research in various topics related to storm surge, tropical cyclone and loss impact

Skills and experience that will lead to success:
  • M. S. or PhD degree in Meteorology, Climate Science, Oceanography, or similar Earth Science field (required)
  • Fluent in programming in some of the following - MATLAB, R, Python (required)
  • Fluent in programming in some of the following - SLOSH, Delft3D/SFINCS, ADCIRC (required)
  • Problem solving skills, collaborative demeanor, willingness to learn (required)
  • Experience with MS products - Word, Powerpoint, Excel (required)
  • Writing and presentation skills (required)
  • Experience with catastrophe modeling (preferred)
  • User level experience with SQL, ArcGIS, QGIS is useful (preferred)

Pay Transparency Laws:

The salary range for this position is $95,000 to $110,000 annually. The actual salary will vary based on applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.
