Job Details:

This is a per diem position. Lab hours are Monday - Friday, 7:30am-6:00pm. Full shift or partial shift options available.

Under the general supervision of physician and catheterization lab supervisor, this position performs and assists with diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization procedures. Provides assistance with patient care according to established policies and procedures. Adheres to and enforces standards of the catheterization lab.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Determines correct exposure factors and correlates rapid film changer programs with tubes involved.
  • Operates all radiographic fluoroscopic and medical equipment in designated areas including rapid film changers, portable image intensifier and automatic contrast injector.
  • Prepares and maintains all monitoring and recording equipment necessary for diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization procedures, assessing functionality of those instruments and reporting any malfunctions to the Technical Supervisor.
  • Responsible for maintenance and storage of hemodynamic and angiographic data for all catheterization procedures.
  • Responsible for operation and maintenance of various equipment used during catheterization procedures including:
  • Hemodynamic recorder, including maintenance of an acceptable ECG throughout the procedure.
  • Digital angiography equipment, including acquisition and archiving of angiographic images.
  • Power contrast injectors
  • Intravascular ultrasound, including maintenance of the IVUS database.
  • Radi pressure wire device
  • Oxygen saturation and blood-clotting instruments. Assures Quality Control performance on devices
  • Cardiac output and oxygen consumption instruments.
  • Assists in setting up for catheterization procedures by prepping patients, setting up sterile fields, supplying physicians with needed supplies, and balancing and calibrating transducers when necessary.
  • During procedure, monitors patient status and alerts physician to changes in heart rate and rhythm, blood pressure, and oxygenation status.
  • Completes paperwork necessary for generation of patient bill.
  • Participates in emergency situations by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, cardiac defibrillation, and artificial respiration.
  • Post procedure, assists in clean up of the room in preparation for following procedures.
  • When required, aids in recovery of patients by setting up recovery room and/or achieving hemostasis at catheter insertion site.
  • On a rotating basis, works on-call to provide coverage for the lab during off-hours and weekends.
  • When required, transports patients to and from catheterization lab.
  • Maintains adequate level of supplies in procedure rooms by stocking during available time, alerting the individual responsible for ordering supplies of items that need to be ordered.
  • Performs various related duties, as assigned by Technical Supervisor/and or Nurse Manager.
  • Contributes to enhance patient care and outcomes.
Job Qualifications:

JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Technical ability to set up, operate and maintain various biomedical instruments used in the cardiac catheterization lab.
  • Ability to understand and relate concepts in cardiovascular anatomy and physiology to procedures being performed.
  • Verbal skills to effectively communicate pertinent information to all personnel involved in catheterization procedures.
  • Physical ability to assist with transfer and transport of patients and capability of working for extended periods of time while wearing protective lead aprons.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patients under his or her care.
  • Ability to work under stressful and high-pressure situations. Many patients are high risk and/or emergency patients.

  • Has the skills and knowledge to provide care to the age groups of the population served including:
  • Knowledge of growth and development
  • Provide age appropriate communication

EDUCATION

  • Level of knowledge generally obtained by completing a two-year approved program (minimum of two years) and registration in radiology by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

EXPERIENCE

  • The equivalent or minimum of one-year experience in a cardiac catheterization laboratory.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is done in an area with potential for exposure to hazards such as blood-borne pathogens, ionizing radiation, high voltage. Following established safety guidelines minimizes these risks.
